Who are you keeping happy?

Dear President Trump,

I may be becoming overly cynical, but I can’t help but think that whoever released two pages of your 2005 federal tax return was hoping that it would function as a distracting shiny object that would get us off the difficult and complicated topic of health care reform. Now, if you had actually released full tax information for the last 10 years, that might have done it. But as it is, just showing that you paid some portion of your fair share of taxes without giving us information about the sources of the revenue and who you need to keep happy, where, is just throwing us a cracked bone. I’m not biting.

What I want to know is who you and Mr. Ryan and the herd of Republican sheep in congress need to keep happy. Which lobbyists, which deep pockets, which whipped up and manipulated voters, which foreign stakeholders are you all trying to keep happy with a health care bill that would cover millions fewer at higher cost to individuals? And while you all keep pointing to the modest improvement in the federal deficit the new bill might achieve, what about the increases in personal bankruptcies due to medical costs, what about states going broke to cover the most basic healthcare needs of their poor and uninsured, where are those numbers figured in? We don’t even have to consider the human toll of going without needed medical care, the stress of knowing everything you’ve worked for could evaporate in a second if illness or injury were to occur and we would still come out way behind just with the most basic financial realities. Most of us realize that the Affordable Care Act is an imperfect piece of legislation and could benefit from refinement. Ok. Let’s refine it. Of the choices before us, the ACA has the distinction of being compassionate and sensible while the new bill is neither.

I pray that you will do the right thing and step up for the health and interests of people who didn’t happen to be born into a life that handed them a silver spoon upon entry. We all need safety, happiness, health, and peace. All of us, including you;

May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May your life unfold and intersect peacefully.

Sincerely,
Tracy Simpson
