Making Melania breakfast on Mother’s Day and other tales

Dear President Trump,

It’s Mother’s Day here in the US. You might have missed the memo. I’m not sure but since you were golfing today, almost certainly without Melania, it seems as though you either didn’t know or didn’t care. But maybe I’m not giving you enough credit. Maybe you and Barron made her her favorite breakfast and delivered it with a thoughtful gift and beautiful flowers. And maybe cows jump over the moon now.

Wouldn’t it have been amazing if after fixing Melania her favorite breakfast you took the time to speak to the American people, to reassure us you and your cabinet truly have our best interests at heart. If you were to give such a talk you would tell us our civil liberties remain solid, our waters will be protected, our public lands will stay public, our reproductive rights are our rights, healthcare will be accessible for all, justice will be equally weighed out, the arts will be supported so they are vital and strong, sensible gun control measures are being put in place, workers’ rights to living wages are guaranteed, fair taxation on the wealthy and corporations is a tangible goal, scientific inquiry is valued and supported adequately, and the needs of children and families are paramount. I realize the chances of you saying even one of these things is about as likely as a cow jumping over the moon. I am certain, however, that one day in the not too distant future, we will have a president who puts the needs of the country before her or his own desires and whims. I am certain many, if not all, of these issues will be on her or his agenda. We’ve hit a very bad patch with you but it is temporary. We will learn from it and we will not let it happen again, ever. Too much is at stake for us to zone out again and give over our democracy to greedy immature bullies who care for no one but themselves and their bank rolls.

Patience is called for. Steadfast resistance is called for. Blessings and compassion are called for.

May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May your life unfold and intersect peacefully.

Sincerely,
Tracy Simpson
