If Hillary had won…

Dear President Trump,

It remains to be seen whether there will be hard evidence confirming that you and your campaign colluded with Russia to throw the election (or elections). It’s looking that way but we’ll see. Should it come to pass that such evidence is uncovered I will be hard pressed to say which downstream effect is most damaging since there are so very many possible options from which to choose. The one I’ve been focused on today, though, is how awful it would (will) be to find out that Hillary Clinton and her vision for America and America’s role in the world was illegally stolen from us. She is not perfect nor is she omnipotent, but she would have set out to start addressing the many challenges facing us as a country and us as inhabitants of our planet. Obviously she couldn’t fix them all or even work out coalitions to fix them all, but we would have been able to focus on the issues rather than all your efforts to make things worse for average people and that much more lucrative for yourselves. I think we’d be debating infrastructure repairs and how to improve and extend health care access, how to fund life-saving research and ensure equal protections for all. Basically, we would have been focused on how government can support the necessary functions that those of us who don’t live in rarified wealthy bubbles need to make life livable. And we would have been working on how to do that for ourselves in the US without further compromising the quality of life and resources for people in the developing world. In other words, she and we would have been using our powers for good.

If you and Russia stole the election there will be so very many things you will have to answer for and taking us all down a nihilistic, divisive, hate-filled path and preventing us from engaging in true democratic wrangling over how best to serve the needs of all the people (ALL the people) is one of the especially odious things you will have to answer for. I send you this blessing because no matter what happens, you need it.

May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy and truly strong.
May your life unfold and intersect peacefully.

Sincerely,
Tracy Simpson
