Dear President Trump,
I’ve been at a loss to know what to say to you the last couple of days. I don’t want to repeat myself too much and even if they are dressed up a little differently day-to-day, the same old issues just keep being recycled. We are getting whiplash from the constant jerking of our attention from one to another of the issues even as we start to normalize them. It’s as though we are saving our true outrage for something truly off-the-charts heinous because the merely regular off-the-charts heinous is old (redundant) news.
I was especially struck this morning when I read an op ed claiming your recent firing of Director Comey and your earlier request that he give a pass on the Russia investigation are going to make the “Kremlin Kaper” look like nothing. It was just one person and who knows, maybe he’ll end up being right but if it is true you and your campaign colluded with Russia so you could win the election, that hardly qualifies as a “kaper”. I bet you’d prefer everyone get their panties in a twist over you firing Comey and what each of you did or didn’t say about Flynn or loyalty than if we kept a laser focus on what went on with Russia. It may be what ends up taking you down is the obstruction charges, but it would be a terrible disservice to the country and to the rest of the world if Russia’s role in the election(s) and any collusion with them on the part of any Americans is not thoroughly investigated and understood. Yes, part of it would be to serve justice and to set the record straight, but even more importantly, we need to understand how we as a country were (and are) vulnerable to these attacks. Once understood, even if imperfectly, we need to do all we can to fix those vulnerabilities, whether they are structural database safety issues, unchecked conniving false news narratives, our willingness to believe the worst about those we dislike no matter how far-fetched, and our greed. That’s probably just the tip of the iceberg, actually. There are no easy solutions but we can’t just get you on obstruction and wipe our hands as though we are done and can move on.
You could make this all a whole lot easier by going ahead and coming clean on everything. How about that? While you think about it, here’s your blessing:
May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May your life unfold and intersect peacefully.
