Dear President Trump,
How’s it going? Are you nervous about your speech tomorrow? I’m nervous about your speech tomorrow. What you say, the tone you use, how well prepared you seem are all going to be parsed by so many people with so many different agendas it is mind boggling and pretty scary. In my view, you don’t have a very good track record when it comes to staying on script and speaking thoughtfully on difficult topics. The world is waiting with bated breath to see if you can pull this off because if you can’t, the consequences could be quite dire.
You are in a tough spot. If you are too heavy handed and say or insinuate negative things about Islam, you will anger your hosts as well as legions of Muslims around the world. However, if you are not seen as firm and strong, your base could be upset with you for not holding the anti-Muslim line you keep trying to draw in the sand with your travel bans. I suppose, though, that since your base doesn’t seem to think you can do any wrong, you can probably play it more pro-Islam than not. It’ll be interesting to see if your base is more interested in holding you accountable on this issue than they seem to be on the various domestic issues they are giving you passes on. We’ll see. I just don’t want you to start a war.
May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May your life unfold and intersect peacefully.
