A haiku for Charlena

President* Trump,

This evening Laura and I marched in the arm of the BLM protest here that originated at Magnuson Park in honor of Charlena Lyles, the Seattle resident who was four months pregnant when she was shot seven times by SPD three years ago in her home. I have no idea how many people were there, but it seemed like there were easily a thousand.

I’m pretty wound up still, so it’s probably going to be hard to sleep but I’m also exhausted so you just get a haiku tonight. It’s not a very original one, but the words are important and can’t be repeated too many times. Here you go:

Black Lives Matter / Black
Lives Matter / Black Lives Matter
No Justice No Peace

May we all be safe.
May we completely scrap the racist institution that is policing in this country.
May we stand strong together and demand justice.
May we get real and accept that the status quo pseudo-peace is killing black and brown people.

Sincerely,
Tracy Simpson
