“Your true colors” are ugly

Dear President Trump,

This past Thursday there was a pretty great, in a sick sort of way, juxtaposition of articles just below the fold in the WP. On the far left was an article about Chuck Schumer’s appeal to you to nominate Merrick Garland to fill Kennedy’s Supreme Court seat and just to the right of it was one about your pick for the White House communications director, Bill Shine. Schumer reportedly told you that if you were to select Garland it would help unite the country. Apparently that phone call lasted less than five minutes. You and most the rest of the country probably just shook your heads, saying “Chuck, Chuck, seriously, what were you thinking? Unite the country, hah!” When I saw that headline I laughed out loud at the absurd pointlessness of the request. To be honest, though, I didn’t know who Bill Shine is, but the article made it abundantly clear that he is your kind of guy, basically a grotesque media savvy misogyny enabler.

Did you ever listen to Cyndi Lauper’s song “True Colors,” like maybe back when it was expedient for you to pretend you were ok with gay people? Well, the gay anthem nature of the song aside, the line that goes “I see your true colors shining through” just popped into my head, maybe because Bill’s last name is “Shine.” Whatever prompted the earworm’s arrival, it certainly is the case that your choice of Bill S (or BS) is allowing your true colors to keep shining through. Even as you fly through cabinet members and staff, you still have plenty of people with despicable backstories like Bill S to bring on board who will help amplify your divisive misogynistic, racist, and xenophobic messages.

I wonder whether the layout people at the WP intentionally put those two articles side-by-side. Hard to say, but my guess is that it was on purpose and it was done to drive home the point that unifying the country is the last thing on your agenda and that liberals who try to appeal to your better nature (do you have such a thing?) are wasting their breath. Your true colors seem pretty damn set, so the rest of us have to keep organizing and developing ways to thwart your efforts to fractionate us further.

May we be safe from divide and conquer tactics.
May we be happy to engage in give and take for the greater good.
May we be healthy enough to take one anothers’ perspectives.
May our commitment to peace shine through any differences you might try to exploit.
