You are not going to get a pass on Russia

Dear President Trump,

Other people think I’m giving you too much credit when I suggest you purposely stir up controversy to distract us, but I still think it’s a reasonable hypothesis. We were just seeing a series of headlines about Mr. Mueller’s intensifying investigation into whether your campaign colluded with Russia to sway (fix?) the election and whether firing Mr. Comey constituted obstruction of justice and here you are going off the rails about whether NFL players have the right to peacefully protest the killing of unarmed Black men by police. I realize it was a short hop for you from Stephen Curry turning down the White House invitation to calling on NFL fans to leave games if players choose to take a knee during the national anthem, but it sure seems like you just whacked that hornet’s nest to enrage your fan base and to give liberals something juicy to chew on. And then there’s your escalating threats to North Korea further setting virtually everyone (in the world) on edge. I sure as hell hope someone in your administration has sense enough and courage enough to sit you down and tell you in no uncertain terms that it would not help your cause with the American people if you were to become a War-Time-President because you got us into a war with North Korea. You are not going to get a pass on Russia even if we are in a catastrophic war, especially one of your making.

In 1965 Tich Naht Hahn wrote a poem called “A Prayer for Peace,” which was used in the South Vietnamese “Don’t Shoot Your Own Brother” campaign. There are five lines at the end of the poem I wish you would take to heart and aspire to embody:

“I am determined to cultivate only thoughts
that increase trust and love,
to use my hands to perform only deeds
that build community,
to speak only words of harmony and aid.”

I don’t know what all did or didn’t happen between you and Putin but if you did help him throw the election so that you won, you need to be punished for this. I don’t know what all your tax returns may be hiding but if you did break laws in your financial dealings, you need to be punished for this. If you have been involved in wrongdoing, I urge you to step up and take responsibility and not use the rest of us as human shields.

May we all be safe.
May we all reclaim happiness.
May we all be healthy.
May our lives unfold and intersect peacefully.

Sincerely,
Tracy Simpson
