Address real, not invented, problems

Dear President Trump,

Did Dr. Carson just pull the short straw and had to be the first cabinet member to say something really insanely stupid publicly to provide you some shielding? Who’s up next? It may or may not really be all that calculated (not being one for conspiracy theories, myself), but gosh, it sure seems convenient to periodically have people in your administration intermittently making outrageous statements that function like chum(p) bait online. Look, look over here — see what the nutty neurosurgeon is saying now!

Enough of this. Really, you all need to get your acts together and start behaving like reasonable adults who have enormous responsibilities.

I would also like to suggest that if you are truly interested in protecting the lives and well-being of the American people the following persistent, virulent issues are crying out for attention: over 700 homeless people die every year from exposure/hypothermia, nearly 50,000 veterans are homeless, over 1,000 people are killed annually by police (disproportionately black and brown men), over 1,000 women are killed each year by male romantic partners, over 250 children die annually from accidental shootings. The list goes on and on. The list does not include terrorist attacks by people from any of the 6 countries you listed in the revised travel ban. The ban is a cynical he-man attempt to create the illusion of threat that doesn’t exist, to fix a problem that isn’t a problem while ignoring very real problems that affect vast numbers of us. To use your own words, sad, very sad.

Real adults are clear eyed and accept reality as it is. Actually, a lot of children are capable of this and are better at it than many adults. So I’ll revise and say instead that mature human beings, whatever their age, accept reality as it is. They don’t make shit up because it sounds good or gives them an excuse to go ballistic on innocent people. They recognize real hardship and work to end it. We need as many mature human beings on deck willing to work as we can possibly have and we need immature boys (and girls) to get out of the way.

In an effort to encourage you to join the mature human being camp I send you this blessing:

May you be safe.
May you be happy.
May you be healthy.
May your life unfold and intersect in peace.

Sincerely,
Tracy Simpson
